The Christian Church
Ryan Flores -The Christian Church is based on the New Testament, which is the Bible’s oldest book. The Gospels are the accounts of Jesus’ life. The book of Acts is the first New Testament writing and was composed between 70 and 100 A.D. It also contains letters from early Christian leaders, which we call “epistles.” These letters provide instructions for the church and its members. Throughout the New Testament, Jesus is described as the center of Christian life, but there are other references in the Scriptures.
The Christian Church originated in Roman Judea during the first century AD/CE. It was founded on the teachings of Jesus of Nazareth, who gathered a group of disciples, some of whom later became Christians and were commanded to make his message known throughout the world. The birthday of the Christian Church is celebrated on Pentecost, which marks the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the gathered disciples. From that time, the leadership of the Christian Church passed on to the Apostles.
The name “church” is derived from the Greek word ekklesia, which means “called out”, and is often used to describe a congregation of individuals or a city. It is used in the Septuagint to translate the Hebrew word khl, and is a derivative of ecclesia in most Romance and Celtic languages. The “birthday” of the church is Pentecost.
In the mid-nineteenth century, the Disciples began establishing missionary societies in the overseas world. After World War I, the emphasis on missions shifted to other priorities. However, in the 1960s, the church leaders urged for a more organized structure with a renewed emphasis on congregational polity. In 1968, a national meeting was held in Kansas City, and the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) was formally established. Some congregations did not participate in this process but remain known as independent Christians.
The Christian Church has been the fastest-growing body in the United States by the end of the nineteenth century. By the early twentieth century, it represented the largest body of believers in the United States. At the time of its founding, the Christian Church was the fastest-growing church body in the world. By the end of the 19th century, it represented the fastest-growing body in the country. In the 1970s, two other denominations sprang out of the Stone-Campbell movement. Both churches were centered on the first-century church, but they disagreed on other issues, including the use of instruments and organized missionary activities.
The Christian Church’s name derives from the Greek word ekklesia, which literally means “called out.” It refers to a group of people called together to worship God. It is also an assembly of citizens in a city. At Pentecost, the Holy Spirit descends on the gathered disciples. It is considered the birthday of the church. Today, the Church is the largest faith in the world. With the many branches, each member has his own congregation.
